The Magdala House is located in the heritage district of Black River, St. Elizabeth. The Victorian two-storey house is a piece of architectural history. Magdala was built in the mid1880s for Tom Leyden and William Farquharson of Leyden and Farquharson Shipping Company. Both men were two of the richest men in Jamaica at the time. The liberal use of fretwork gave the house an imposing appearance for the time. In addition to the fretwork design other impressive features were the inside plumbing and concrete foundation walls. Over the years the building has served as a family dwelling, convent, and an orphanage. Although it is currently in a state of disrepair Magdala House still contains remnants of historical interest.
