Sam Sharpe Square is the home to Montego Bay Cultural Centre. The centre offers some of the most comprehensive historic, cultural, and artistic exhibitions in a cultural centre dating back to the 19th century. A visit to the Cultural Centre takes you through its ‘moving and permanent’ museums. They exhibit iconic and contemporary works like the ‘Freedom Monument’, a tribute to slaves who fought in the Christmas rebellion. Aptly, where the centre stands is named after National Hero, The Rt. Excellent Samuel Sharpe who was hung for his leadership in the rebellion.

Opened in 2014 the Cultural Centre houses National Gallery West, an extension of National Gallery of Jamaica and the National Museum West. The latter features artifacts particularly from Montego Bay and its environs and a ‘revolving’ Museum which currently features an exhibition on RASTAFARI. The art gallery’s 200-seat theatre hosts cultural events and scores flock to view the exhibitions or buy authentic art and craft from the gift shop. There is also a bistro offering scrumptious Jamaican dishes.
