Marshall’s Pen Great House is a 300 acre working ranch that was once a coffee plantation. Located in Mike Town/Somerset road Mandeville, the 200 year old great house is a designated heritage and biodiversity conservation site. It manages to capture Jamaica’s history from the earliest Taino time to the post-independence era. Fashioned out of cut stone the home features Spanish walls, louvre windows, and gabled roofing surrounded by landscaped gardens. Inside the home are museum quality pieces, antiques, leather bound books, and Taino artifacts. Leading ornithologist and environmental scientist Robert and Ann Sutton are the current owners who offer hour long tours with advance notice.
Although remnants of the old coffee factory remain it was converted into a modern cottage for visitors partaking in eco-tours, particularly bird watching. Marshall’s Pen is one of the premiere bird watching destinations with more than 100 species of birds including 23 of the 29 endemic species. The property support various endemic species of plants, birds, and reptiles, some of them rare.
