Travelers guide to Montego Bay Jamaica

Montego Bay

No one is in a rush to go anywhere…well, except for taxi drivers. Officially on Montego Bay aka Mobay time, moments are counted in experiences not minutes. Among the smokey jerk restaurants, hustlers, souvenir shops, and somewhere in between there’s a detectable rhythm unique to Mobay’s city streets. Yet, there’s also the smooth tourist countenance that jumps from the pages of glossy Caribbean magazines. The two sides collide and provide a potpourri of things to do in Montego Bay. Positioned on the north-west end of Jamaica, a trip to one of Mobay’s beautiful sandy beaches might be your first instinct.

But venture beyond the oh-so-inviting waters is a lot more waiting to be explored. In this list of things to do in Montego Bay, I’ll take you through the city treasures, down scenic rapids, and up mountainous reserves.

Sail Away

Being so close to Ocho Rios, Mobay is bound to be blessed with an abundance of rivers. It’s no surprise that rafting down these rivers is a thing to do in Montego Bay. The slight shade created by over-grown wild bamboo trees and other unusual foliage on either side of the river complements the gentle swoosh of the guide’s bamboo pole hitting the water. Down the river you go and the scenery is a beaut to take in and a must to capture for the Gram.

River rafting tours on hand-crafted bamboo rafts down Martha Brea River are great for two or as a family outing. The 1-2 hour ride includes complimentary drinks and a knowledgeable and friendly guide. As you journey down the gentle river, tranquil is the only word I can think of to describe it. The river is only 4 ft deep for most of the year and the rafts are comfortable and well-balanced. You may have had a delicious plate of what looks like scrambled eggs for breakfast but it’s ackee. Along the way, you can ask your guide to point out an ackee tree or any information about the river and surrounding area. Pro tip, take swimwear because the water is mighty tempting. Also, a Sunday, Monday, or in the off cruise ship season is the best time to go – fewer people to contend with.

A piece of history and more

The historic monuments of the city stand in the middle of time, from old colonial-esque buildings to exhibitions of Montego Bay’s soul, and they come recommended. Visiting the Great Houses is a great opportunity to visit properties dating back to the 1700s, complete with stories of the history. And some of them have quite the story to tell.

The first thing that will strike you on these tours are the breathtaking landscapes and authentic original pieces that are carefully preserved for your viewing pleasure. Greenwood Great House, a fine example of late 1800s architecture also functions as a museum housing many original pieces from that time. This Great House is not popular on tour maps which is why it is on my list of things to do.

Some even have a foodie element offering a taste of the juiciest tropical fruits, delicious jerk dishes and of course good ole Jamaican rum. Off the beaten path, up winding roads pass humble homes and farm animals, on the top of the mountain is the lush Croydon Plantation. You’ll be greeted by a wide variety of plants and fruits and a constant whiff of pineapples delightfully tickling your nose.

Another notable piece of history to visit is the Sam Sharpe Square downtown Montego Bay. Peek into the life of one of our National heroes, Sam Sharpe, who was the main instigator in slave rebellions that would eventually lead to the emancipation of slaves. There’s not much to see but a small square with exhibits of Sam Sharpe reaching to his people but it tells the story of the spirit of the city. After that, take a walk around downtown with a trusted local guide for views of the sea and mountains, lots of shopping and a real taste of Mobay’s culture.

It’s only Nature

For a side of Montego Bay that most tourists don’t get to see take a trip to one of the city’s Nature Parks. A mere 30-45 minutes away from downtown Mobay, the parks are a piece of paradise that feels worlds apart. You can chill with rabbits and guinea pigs or dangle your feet in a natural pool with tiny fish giving you a free foot spa, I highly recommend Mobay’s nature parks.

Spend the day Abeokuta Paradise Nature Park and enjoy the 40-year-old mineral pools, waterfalls, and panoramic views. Animal Farm and Nature Reserve is another great spot to get some R&R inclusive of a farm tour and an optional river rafting. The roads to get to them are pretty tricky though so travel with an experienced driver.

Dine out

Dining in may be good and all but eating out on the town is even better. Dining out in Montego Bay always comes with a bonus and that’s why the city is known for its dining experiences. These recommends are starter courses to whet your appetite.

Pier 1 is a popular spot to chow down on some seriously delicious seafood. The spectacular sunset from the open-air restaurant is the winner here
