Jamaica usually conjures an image of laying on the beach with a cold beverage and the perfect weather. Although that certainly is a part of what you’ll experience on your visit here, it can also be whatever you want it to be. There are tons of things to do in Jamaica that will beckon you to lose yourself in the adventure and magic of it all in. Some of these things can take you closer to the natural beauty, culture, and history of Jamaica, others will take you on an adrenaline-pumping adventure and still, others will have you meeting our warm friendly people and eating some seriously delicious Jamaican food. If you’re not sure about the things to do in Jamaica, we’ve got you covered. That said, make sure to plan your trip with this post in mind or you’ll be missing out.

Known for our golden beaches and forever stretches of white sand, an afternoon on the world rated seven-mile beach in Negril or the surreal Frenchman’s Cove in Port Antonio goes without saying. But what if I told you there are way more things to do in Jamaica than lazy beach bum days. To start, you’ll be amazed by our landscape. Nature lovers will have plenty to experience, from trail hiking to bird watching to diving and snorkeling. A great place to explore the biodiversity of endemic Jamaican plant and animal species is the Blue and John Crow Mountains and neighbouring Holywell Recreation Park. Your eyes will be treated to hundreds of bird and butterfly endemic species as well as an exceptional hiking experience suited for all levels.

The hiking trail will lead you to cascading streams to cool your feet off or continue on to explore our wealth of pristine underground caves. Dive deep into Jamaica’s historical and cultural richness on guided tours through these caves that once provided refuge for enslaved Maroon communities. Some of these limestone wonders made up of unique rock formations can be found in biodiversity hot spots like the Cockpit Country and Green Grotto Caves. For an even deeper cultural experience, visit the Rastafari Indigenous Cultural Centre in Montego Bay. Rastafari is known around the world as the movement that inspired one the most beloved genre of music, reggae music, as well as other popular cultural practices connected to Jamaica. By experiencing authentic Rastafari philosophy and lifestyle your senses will be engaged as you travel through time and tradition, learn about organic farming practices and indulge in vegan Rastafari cuisine. Top that off with live music and feel the vibe of the culture through dance as you grab a few local craft items on your way out.

Not if but when you do have a day outing on the beach or decide to explore your environs, snapping these adventures is another thing to do when you visit Jamaica. Bless your lens with our tumbling mountainsides and cliffs, lush flora and fauna, and of course the Caribbean sea. Traveling from Port Antonio in the east to Negril in the west you can capture thousands of unique wild and human life. Places like Blue Hole in Ocho Rios and Blue Lagoon in Port Antonio or the many heritage sites in Kingston are a photographer’s dream. These sites have a magnetic appeal with epic backstories no less. The beautifully restored mansion of the first black millionaire in Jamaica and the tale of the wicked witch of Rose Hall Great House are told on tours of these heritage sites in Kingston and Montego Bay respectively. Another epic tale can be heard on a visit to Port Royal once called “the richest and wickedest city in the world.” Renowned for its historic connection to pirates, Port Royal is rich with stories of sea travels in the 14 and 1500s and even inspired the blockbuster movie Pirates of the Caribbean.

For a more artistic experience, things to do in Jamaica can include any of our many galleries and museums. These spaces celebrate and preserve Jamaican and Caribbean creative expression with one of a kind collections from our Taino past to modern day and even our musical contemporaries. They usually offer exhibitions, guided tours, and lectures and panels discussions for visitors to fully immerse in the artistic depth of our culture. The National Art Gallery in Kingston and Ahh..Ras Natango in Montego Bay are great spots to visit to get a peek into our modern contemporary art collections as well as tons of books and locally made art and craft pieces. Listening to Bob Marley, you will hear him speak of Trench Town rock and the Trench Town Culture Yard have preserved some of the articles, instruments, and furnishings used by the iconic Wailers band in their younger years. While you’re in the area, swing by Fleet Street to view the eye-popping community-created murals all along the walls of the community.

Adrenaline junkies are not left out of things to do in Jamaica. You can soar through the air on bobsleds or zip lines for one of the most thrilling rides of a lifetime. It also doesn’t hurt that the tropical landscape and coastal features are your backdrops. Speaking of bobsled, the Show Cart experience paying homage to the 1993 Jamaican bobsled hit movie Cool Runnings in Ocho Rios is a fun time for visitors to race push karts. This is accompanied by traditional Jamaican music and dance performances making it a good addition to the list of things to do in Jamaica. If that’s not fast enough, kick it up a notch with ATV or go-kart racing and paintball.

After all that adventure, you’ll definately be hungry. Having a delicious serving of jerk chicken or pork has to be on your list of things to do (eat) in Jamaica. We are an exotic foodie destination so it’s no surprise that our cuisine is a blend of bold flavours and indigenous spices that bring joy to your taste buds. On your visit here, feasting on the freshest and best tasting seafood dishes most likely in a breezy atmosphere overlooking the sea is a must. If you’re craving traditional Jamaican food then a plate of oxtail, curried goat, or stew peas is never far away. Chillin Restaurant and M10 Bar and Grill in Kingston are great spots to pick up a plate of Jamaican soul food that will change your life! With a full stomach, it’s now time for a drink. The roads of Jamaica’s beautiful South Coast will take you to some of the best rum in the world. The multi-sensory experience of the Appleton Estate Rum tour will have you touching and tasting how Jamaican rums are really made.

There are so many things to do in Jamaica that one trip might not be enough. So be prepared to come back again!
