Rasta Taco is the creation of Mario Melendez, an OC native, who was inspired by a 2006 spring trip to Jamaica. While on vacation, Mario noticed jerk chicken stands at every roadside stop in Jamaica, but not one taco stand. Influenced by his love for tacos and the Rastafarian culture in Jamaica, Mario initially launched Rasta Taco as a catering service in 2006. The name, is in direct response to the Mexican and Jamaican cultural fusion that Mario wants to marry together for his fast-casual concept.
With the catering company’s immediate success, Mario launched a mobile margarita bar service, Rasta Rita Margarita, in 2012, offering Southern California’s best margaritas. In 2016 Mario opened his first brick-and-mortar Rasta Taco in the heart of Laguna Beach, CA.
Through collaboration with his friend Chris Blackwell, Reggae pioneer and founder of Island Records, Rasta Taco Jamaica made its debut in Ocho Rios at Island Village February, 2018. Island Village is a beach-front tourist hot spot and local favorite offering restaurants, entertainment and shopping located in the heart of Ocho Rios, Jamaica.
Both brick-and-mortar taco shops honor the tradition of classic tacos while paying tribute to Reggae.
