Jamaican Beaches

Sun, sand, and sea. These are the delightful trio to look forward to when considering a trip to Jamaica. Combined, they produce some of the best beaches you’ll have the pleasure of basking your body in. Jamaican beaches have always had an unwavering pull at any time of year but even more so in those bitter cold months. Imagine leaving the -3℃  weather behind and lounging on a warm beach with a breathtaking view. Now imagine having over 55 of those to choose from. They are so good that they consistently rank among the top 10 in the world. In 2018, world ranking accolades poured in from Trip Advisor, UK based website Independent, and HuffPost Life. Although there are so many beaches and so little time to enjoy them all we’ll share some of our favourites with you so that way when you visit you’ll know exactly where to dive in.

Beyond the tropical climate, no two Jamaican beach experience is quite the same. There are noticeable variations. Some are surrounded by rocky cliffs, others are Instagram perfect with white, sandy shores, and still, others are known for their delectable seafood. In between those are a few hidden gems that seem to teleport to another dimension. One thing’s for sure Jamaican beaches are beach bum magnets. If you land in Negril, laying out at any point along the infamous seven-mile stretch is everything you could want out of a beach experience. Your only struggle will be where to settle for that perfect sunset photoshoot. Along the way, the soft sand and gentle tides of Bloody Bay beach is great for snorkeling or you can find a comfortable spot to lounge on Bourbon beach. The restaurants on the stretch are ready to serve scrumptious seafood dishes and even have live bands for those who want to dance the evening away. Negril is known to have some of the most vibrant beaches with a nice mix of locals and visitors.

The best thing about Jamaican beaches is that one is never far away. Depending on where on the island you are, one could literally be a few minutes walk away. Lined with beautiful coastlines, Jamaica beaches tend to be clear and a mix of blue and turquoise. On most days, the water is so calm and clear you can see the sea life swimming around. Another great thing about Jamaican beaches is a lot of them are family oriented with fun games and activities for kids and kids at heart to enjoy.

Beaches like Puerto Seco beach in Discovery Bay, St. Ann are so gentle and shallow even kids can play in them without fear of them being knocked over by a wave. Close by in Montego Bay Doctor’s Cave is best for strong swimmers but non-swimmers can enjoy the powdery soft sand and the view of the amazingly blue water as well. There’s a reef not so far off so bring your snorkel gear and prepare to meet people and share a few laughs with new friends.

Jamaican beaches are usually lively and full of vibes and laughter but there are options for the more introverted traveler. Some are more laid back and rustic while maintaining the pristine aesthetic. Little known hidden gems like Pleasure Cove nude beach in Ocho Rios are for those in the know. This very picturesque beach with close to untouched white sand has the sweetest cove and scores of almond trees for shade. You’ll lose track of time in this captivating shoreline capsule and the day will go by in the wink of an eye.

There are other best-kept secrets an hour and a half drive away on the south coast of the island offering a blend of golden sand and southern coastal aquamarine waters. The relaxed vibe of Treasure beach on the south coast is an authentic Jamaican beach experience with minimum clutter, iconic scenery, and that rustic island feel. Treasure beach is an entire six-mile stretch so there are many spots that are good for an undisturbed stroll or collecting shells. A quick word of caution, be prepared for a strong undertow at times because the afternoons can get a bit windy. Other than that, the serene mornings go well with a good book or yoga session (if you’re into that).

The rustic, picturesque beach scene continues on the east of the island. It is so scenic you’ll feel like you’ve walked onto a tourist commercial set. Speaking of which, our beaches have had some famous tourists. Notable food traveler, the late Anthony Bourdain came for the experience and others like Ian Flemming loved it so much it became his muse for the James Bond franchise. The secret is the mixture of lush, green countryside and beautiful seemingly untouched beaches and rivers. If you want to join the A list group, Frenchman’s Cove is a great beach to start. This Jamaican beach is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and famous in Jamaica. What makes it special is the white sand and turquoise water with a river alongside it that runs right into the sea. Another must visit is the teal waters of Blue Lagoon or relax on Boston beach and enjoy the view while enjoying your jerk chicken or pork.

Finally, if you land in the hustle and bustle of the island’s capital Kingston there is more to it than high rise buildings and reggae museums. If you explore a small island off the coast of Port Royal you’ll find Maiden Cay. Maiden Cay is the shore of the coastline of a larger landmass. This makes it technically not a beach in the traditional sense but really all beach. Trust us, the Caribbean sea never look so vibrant anywhere else.

This off the main spot is great for a cookout with friends or a casual personal day. Whether it’s secluded or full of vibes, a day at Maiden Cay or any Jamaican beach will leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
