This lovely green space is in the heart of corporate Jamaica. Opened in 2002, Emancipation Park is beautifully decorated with plants, flowers, and trees indigenous to island. The indigenous ones are tagged so you can learn more about them as you stroll. The 7 acre park is more than a respite from city life. Other features are its well-maintained 500m jogging track and the stage area where events are often held free to the public. The park’s inner circle has walkways, landscaped grounds, and benches for relaxation. But the main attraction is the 11ft controversial ‘Redemption Song’ statue at the Oxford road entrance. Erected a year after the park’s opening, the Laura Facey Cooper piece depicts a nude couple gazing to the heavens. It is said to represent the spirit of freedom but you can make your own conclusion.
